    Hi Hilda

Hope you are well. You may remember me from last year I arrived in East Peckham on the 2nd feb. I am hoping to arrive in East Peckham late tonight or tommorow but it seems you are on your travels still.

I am hoping to stay a bit longer than last year because I enjoyed it so much.

I am in contact with Leo more like a cat than the name suggests a lion. She has informed me that there is a new resident in the road. Roger the Rattlesnake, apparently some woman up the road freaked out on his arrival. Apparently Roger is unlike most rattle snakes and his rattle is more like a bell and he is furry. Leo and Roger are apparently very good friends so I look forward to meeting him.

    Hope all is well

    Sid

    Hi Hilda

I am not sure what the tradition is in the africa. IN the Uk they leave carrots and sherry for Father Christmas. In Austria they leave carrots and schnapps.

Unfortunately for Stephan I found his larger than usual stash of carrots for Rudolph and ate the lot in one sitting, admitidly those pesky goats helped me out.

    What happens in africa??

    Hi Hilda

I hope that you are well.

Well I have been keeping rather busy since the launch of my song. I know that Felicity knows all the words so perhaps she might sing it for you. Perhaps Marc will get out his guitar and provide some background for it.

If you are able to access the web perhaps you should check out my website… if not ask F or M for some help!!

    Best Wishes

    Hi Hilda,

I know you told us you came from Essex originally - so i thought you might like to see this bit of news about another hippo in Essex. Any relative? SEE: http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/uknews/6773261/Zoo-celebrates-birth-of-baby-pygmy-hippo.html

    Hi Hilda,
Hope you didnt get that Bilharzia when you went in Lake Malawi (although I suddenly realise that I have never seen you swimming!!)….. Is that your hidden secret - you are a hippo who cannot swim? I dont think I should try swimming as my head would float away…. Love Teddy

    Hello Hilda

I’m sitting relaxing under my tree. I know that happens a lot. The african sun is quite hot and when needs must then it must be done.

I have never seen this behavious in real hippo’s like you. but henrietta seems to like to catch the evening sun.

Would you beleive that Elephants and Hippos get on very well. I supppose they both make silly noises which seem completely strange to the rest of us normal folk.

any way enough of my ramblings, I understand that felicity is returning to her home in a month, just for a fleeting visit. Whilst my tree Is fairly in shade i am sure I could fit a small hippo under it.

If you can make it over with felicity I will make some roasties and yorkshire puds. I know hippos like this.

I hope that your tree has shaded you from its worst of the sun.. perhaps you could run some shade management courses to help everyone. Hippos are apparently 2nd to no animal in shade management.

    Best Wishes

    Gerald

    Hi Hilda,
Just beginning to feel sorry for you - nobody seems to have written to you lately! My life is not as exciting as yours - I seem to spend most of my life just sitting on the chair. Stuart took Marion’s dog out for a run yesterday - but Stuart was fitter than the dog and they had to walk home! I cannot go jogging any more because my head is a bit loose and would fall off.

    Hello Hilda!
It’s Elvis here, sorry for not speaking to you for a while, but it’s been very busy here recently! There has been the school play, ‘The Pirate Pretender,’ - I enjoyed seeing all of the boys dressed up and everyone working together to produce an excellent production. I hope you had a good relaxing Easter holiday like me, and I hope you got lots of Easter eggs! Some of the boys here have been working very hard in preparation for their exams coming up soon. So what have you been up to? I heard you got to the southernmost point in Africa, and you have travelled over 30,000 km - well done, although Mrs Crouch did say that you looked very messy and that you needed a bath!

    Hi Hilda,

Its all very well your adopted owners going kite surfing all the time - but when are you getting back in the water? There is no excuse now, the water must be warm - go and have a good wallow. 6 months without a wash is a bit too long!

Lots of love from all your friends at the Hippo Aqua Jogging and Aerobics Club

    Hi Hilda
I am really looking forward to visiting you in Namibia in a few weeks time. I will be in my element in the Namib desert but think that you will be a little out of place. Im especially looking forward to Sossusvlei. Perhaps I can take you on a camel ride up the dunes. Never mind when we head up to Etosha and the Zambesi you will be able to show me round your territory. I may even learn to swim.

    Hello Hilda,
So you have made it down to South Africa now. Hope you manage to see the Drakensburg Mountains, they are really picturesque. Don’t worry about Table Mountain in Cape Town, you can always take the cable car to the top - just make sure the ‘cloth’ or cloud does not come over while you are up there ! Lovely beaches at Sea Point, which is just below Lion’s Head. My mistress used to live in Kloof Road, but that was many years ago - before decimalisation.
Anyway, have fun and write soon

    Hi Elvis
I hope you are enjoying England – heard it is cold and snowing there – not really ideal weather for us hippos and elephants!

It is very hot over here in Africa – we are in Mozambique presently. We have seen many hippo friends during our journey, but no obvious direct relatives of mine – red with pink spots!

Our next stop is South Africa, so we will soon be at the southern tip of Africa – Cape Agulhas, very exciting! I am looking forward to climbing Table Mountain, but when I told Marc he would probably have to carry me he didn’t seem overly excited about the idea!

Then we travel up to Namibia to meet Mrs Crouch, who you know.
    Keep in touch.

I hope everyone is enjoying the snow … and I hope that it continues!!

I guess hilda you have not been so lucky to see snow in africe!!

    Hi hilda

I have been following your diary for some time and have being enjoying your exploits

I have come down south to meet my relatives. It has been a number of years since we all met up but we used to travel around in a VW beetle.

I hope you are having a good time and from the pictures and the diary it would certainly seem so.

I think Bob would have been a much better vechicle for us to travel around rather than a pink bettle.

Hope you enjoy the rest of your trip and finally end up with your with your african relatives

    Dear Hilda
Sorry I haven’t been in contact for ages, life is so hectic what with my owners getting ready for Christmas – we have loads of their food, drink and presents round a tree with a fairy on top ! She says it doesn’t hurt but I can tell you it looks painful where that branch is stuck ! I will never really understand humans.
They did take me away to a posh hotel in Jersey for a week. Great weather and right on the sea so I was able to wallow on the beach when no one was watching !
My mistress and I have been a bit confused on tracking your route as it says you have been in India, America and even Brazil so I think we are going to give up on that for awhile until it is sorted. The pictures in Kenya and Uganda bought back many memories for both my mistress and me. Hope you enjoyed the view of the Rift Valley when driving to Nakuru.
I do hope you are still enjoying yourself and that Felicity and Marc are letting you explore the areas you stop at.
Not sure what you are doing while this Christmas season is going on but as I have heard many people say it I would like to wish you, dear Hilda, Felicity and Marc a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.
    Keep safe
    Harry

    Hi Hilda!
Christmas has finally arrived! We’ve been very busy here at Solefield, there’s been Christmas Plays from Reception to year 5, and they were all brilliant. I’m sure a lot of effort went in to making them. There was also a Christmas fair yesterday and the school certainly looked well decorated! We’re going to break up tomorrow, and then it will be even closer to Christmas! As our present to you, there’ll be some more football boots on the way, plus some Cricket equipment, I’ll be sending these to you shortly. Soon we should be able to speak to you via webcam and I can show you all of my friends here at Solefield, and you can show me all of the Hippos in the Serengeti. I’ve heard the Serengeti has one of the oldest ecosystems on the Earth, and I heard that there was once a volcano there! Remember to keep checking for more messages from me during Christmas. Have a great Christmas in the Serengeti!
    That’s all for the moment!

    Hi Hilda

I have just caught up on your travels and was amazed by the bits about Uganda.

I think I have spotted one of my relatives, the one who is in the foreground of the picture. She certainly does not look like a gorilla. In fact she seems to have developed some chimpanzee characteristics but then she always was a monkey!!.

    Speak to ya soon Hilda

    Hi Hilda,

I’m Clare Bear. Felicity made me many years ago and I know how kind and giving she is as she also brought me some PJ’s and then gave me to her friend Clare - who I must say is very beautiful, funny and great fun to live with!!

Anyway I love your blog and your photo’s. I am a little jealous though as I’ve only ever travelled from East Peckham to Bough Beech and although that is a really long way and I needed a passport and everything, I didn’t see the sites you have!!

I have been reading your story over Clare’s shoulder and would love to catch up with you somewhere on your travels - I’ve just got to convince Clare to take me!

Might I suggest a little more suncream on your body as it’s looking a little red!

    Enjoy your travels!

    Hi Hilda
I have been looking at the photos that your human friends have put on the website and reading their diary. You seem to have gone very quiet. I do hope you had a good time on the ferry and managed to take a few dips in the Nile on your way down. I hear that Ouphie (your elephant companion) went walk about in the desert in Sudan. I have a feeling that he may have gone to look for doggie who went off into the desert in Oman when Marc was 2. Unfortunately he was never found as he was the same colour as the sand.
I hope to see more of your photos soon.
    Love from Claude.

Hi Harry, Teddy, JP and Claude

Oh my gosh, how exciting to hear from all of you! Sorry I’ve been a little slow to reply, but the internet connection speed is not quite what it was in Essex!

Harry - Sorry I missed out on the Hippodrome, we always used to have so much fun there getting down and strutting our funky stuff together. Say hi to Henrietta for me and I don’t really mind you going round Heather’s house if you have to. Have you seen my photos though - think I have lost a pound or two since I have been travelling??

I am at the Nile now and Marc and Felicity tell me we should be seeing quite a lot of it on our trip and we are going white water rafting at its source in Jinja, Uganda.

JP - I’ll look out for some bones, although I believe elephants like to bury them all in one place so may be upset if I took one of them.

    Love to you all.

    Dearest Hilda,
So now I know why you couldn’t meet me at the Hippodrome on Saturday 27th September. It was by chance that Henrietta came across the website that your human friends have set up. You are very brave travelling all that way; I do hope that Felicity and Marc allow you to wallow in water occasionally ! I will be able to track your progress on Heather’s computer although I know you don’t like me seeing her but it will be easier than going to Henrietta’s house. When you get to Uganda see if you can persuade Marc to take you to Murchison Falls on the Nile. My ancestors used to live near a place called Chobe Lodge, every night the humans would put salt blocks out to encourage any hippos in the area to come out of the water – it worked every time, so I am led to believe and the humans all loved to watch.
Well I had better stop now. I look forward to reading your progress reports.
    Yours as always
    Harry
